Are you a senior AI engineer ready to build technology that delivers intelligent, personalised user experiences?
Join Camplight and work with one of our partners on an AI-powered consumer application at the frontier of conversational AI, long-term memory, and responsible product engineering.
What you’ll be working on?
One of Camplight’s partners is building an AI-powered consumer application that delivers personalised, context-aware conversational experiences.
The app combines conversational AI with persistent memory, personalised context, real-time text and media generation, and agent-based workflows. The engineering challenge is not simply integrating an LLM: it is building a reliable system that can retain relevant user context, respond naturally and safely, and continuously improve through experimentation and evaluation.
Because the application operates in a sensitive, regulated space and includes adult content, privacy, user safety, crisis handling, and misuse prevention are core product requirements—not afterthoughts.
Your Role
As the Lead AI Engineer, you will take technical ownership of our partner’s AI platform and help establish the foundations of its AI engineering function.
You will define and implement the architecture for long-term memory, retrieval, context management, model routing, and AI agents. You will work hands-on across backend and AI systems, balancing product quality with latency, reliability, and inference cost. You will also design robust evaluation and observability practices so the team can safely measure and improve the product over time.
You will work closely with Camplight and our partner’s team, translate detailed behavioural requirements into production-ready systems, and help hire and guide future AI engineers as the product grows.
About Camplight
We build self-organizing technical teams, offer software development services, and work with businesses and entrepreneurs to create new products.
With over 300 successful software projects, some ongoing for over 8 years, we strive for long-term success for our partners.
By following the principles of self-management and organizing as a cooperative, we achieve 95% satisfaction among them.
We seek the best talent to join us and value transparency, collaboration, trust, responsibility, and innovation.
When joining Camplight, you can become a co-owner of the cooperative, allowing you to steer the business and share in the rewards of our collective success.
What are we looking for?
- Ownership mindset: We want individuals who care about their work, take pride in being professionals, have high standards, and deliver on them. This is the main way Camplight stands out from competitors.
- Technical expertise: We expect you to know your tools and build high-quality, maintainable software efficiently.
- Communication skills: You’ll communicate frequently with our partner and team members. Clear written and verbal communication, excellent English, emotional intelligence, and a genuine desire to understand the person in front of you are essential.
- Pragmatic product thinking: You can make sound trade-offs between model quality, latency, reliability, safety, and cost—and move from ambiguous product requirements to dependable technical solutions.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience building and operating production backend or platform systems
- Strong hands-on experience with Python and TypeScript; comfort with Go is a plus
- Deep experience building LLM-powered products and services in production
- Strong understanding of RAG, embeddings, semantic retrieval, hybrid search, and context engineering
- Experience with vector databases and/or graph-based data stores
- Experience designing AI-agent or workflow orchestration systems
- Experience working with multiple model providers, model routing, fallbacks, and prompt/version management
- Strong knowledge of LLM evaluation, observability, quality monitoring, and experimentation
- Experience optimising AI systems for latency, availability, scalability, and inference cost
- Familiarity with cloud infrastructure, APIs, distributed systems, and production operations
- Strong understanding of privacy, security, GDPR, content safety, crisis handling, and prompt-injection mitigation
- Ability to translate behavioural specifications into predictable, testable product behaviour
- Experience leading technical decisions and mentoring or growing engineering teams
- Excellent English communication skills
What do we offer?
We focus on health, wealth, and empowering relationships:
- Fully remote work with flexible work hours
- Competitive salary
- Opportunity to become a co-owner of the cooperative
- Individual career development plan
- Friendly team and company culture
- Prioritization of mental and physical health in the workplace, with the freedom to make decisions about oneself, supported by peers committed to a healthy lifestyle
- Empowering relationships for engineering alongside colleagues who cherish growth mindsets in a unique environment that blends service and product craftsmanship
What does the interview process look like?
- Initial Interview: We’ll start with a friendly 45-minute cultural and technical interview. Two members of our team will assess your cultural fit, past experience, engineering expertise, the major challenges you’ve tackled, and discuss your ideal workspace.
- You can choose between two Technical Deep Dive options:
- Homework Assignment: If there’s a match, we’ll provide a brief homework assignment designed to take around 2 hours to complete. This will be followed by a 1-hour technical interview to discuss the homework and conduct a technical deep dive.
- Pair Programming: If you prefer not to do a homework assignment, we’ll have a 2-hour technical deep dive session, primarily focused on pair programming.
Join us at Techlight to connect with like-minded builders and grow alongside a trusted network of experts. Techlight is an invite-only community for developers and industry experts to exchange ideas, share experiences, and learn from one another.
